I hate it when people spell out stuff to me, because my brain tries to makes sense of each letter in SPANISH. Why brain, why do you fail me so? Some clients must think I have a hearing problem because I ask them to repeat themselves again and again when they spell their names or emails. The one letter that always gets me is "i", because to my ear it sounds like "ay". The "e" sounding like "i" in Spanish adds an extra layer of confusion.

This just in from the "Duh!" department

Do no, do not if you can help it, read/listen to a translated version of BolaƱo's 2666. I'm reading it in Spanish and have the audiobook in English, which I was listening to and from work. Mistake! When I got to part four and all the characters are Mexican, the English translation was missing a lot of the flavor. As I said, duh! How could this have been such a surprise? I think about translations and dubbing and language all the time. I guess I was just hoping this time it would be different, and I was excited to have had been able to download audible's file for only about 7 dollars and get completely into the novel even as I was driving.

I think part one of 2666, the one about The Critics, works in English sort of OK, but the closer I got in the narrative to the town of Santa Teresa, the more I realized I had to dump the audiobook. Hrrmp!

Now I need to download some podfic, to listen to instead.

Waiting for the SPN fic

Yes, to this you could say "Write your own!" but -er- not ever going to happen. Because 1) not a writer and 2) sometimes so ESL that my brain fails at both languages. But waiting patiently for 4.20 to pop up somewhere in the interwebs? That I can do very well!

About the ESL thing, my recent trip to Guadalajara made it obvious how many little glitches I have in my Spanish now, after only 6 years in the US. I maybe speak it once every couple of weeks, and yeah, it gets slightly rusty once in a while. I don't know how much other people notice, but I notice.

I'm trying very hard to stay away from spoilers for the next few episodes of SPN, but I did see the promo for 4.20 and I'm pretty excited. Only 3 episodes left! OMG!

After a chat with the Translation committee I went out for a walk with Mr. Logovo and friends. We decided we're going to go see State of Play later on today, although I have missgivings about how good the adaptation of the miniseries to a 2 hour movie will be. The BBC production was 6 hours long, with extremely good actors playing supporting roles. Most of those characters must to have had been written out or greatly diminished, so yeah. Good thing I like Russell Crowe so much (I have yet to tire of watching him as Jack in Master and Commander), but Ben Affleck -um- not so crazy about having to see him onscreen. Even when he's in good movies he's so bland.

Also reading just a tiny bit on CSS. I'm motivated to learn more now that I've been playing around with layouts.
