I've had this freaking song stuck in my head for 2 weeks now.

Remainders of being a kid in the 70s exposed to way too much Spanish pop. I remember singing this when I was 7, but I had no idea that it was about Melina Mercouri being awesome and her return to Greece after the military junta fell.

I can't think of the last time I heard more than 30 seconds of music in a regular radio station. Really, not even a vague memory. It has to be years now. It's kind of alarming for someone who held on to the radio station 91X throughout high school and college, and used it as shorthand for talking about music in Tijuana.

In the 90s I took some classes in SDSU and, possibly being the only born in Mexico person my fellow students had ever talked for more than 2 minutes, they turned to me to explain all things Mexican. One guy asked me very seriously about the singer Selena and Mariachi music, since to him Selena was singing Mariachi and surely I knew what all that stuff was about. A fellow student who had gotten to know me a bit more laughed and answered for me, since I was kind of dumbfounded by the question. She said something like "But she listens to 91X, duh!", which instantly explained that I wasn't going to be the source for Tejano or Mariachi he was looking for.

I love mp3 players. I love that I don't have to hear all the crap that plays on the radio, even my beloved 91X, which was taken over by Clear Channel a few years ago and has since gone through a few owners. But I do think fondly of those moments, when first meeting someone who was into music, when 91X came up and you discovered a fellow fan, and you knew that you were talking to someone who very likely loved Depeche Mode and OMD as much as you did, who first listened to U2 when Boy or War came out, recognized the voices of Alison Moyet and Joe Jackson, and would find The Cure and Cocteau Twins achingly beautiful.

Sometimes I forget how out of place I felt at weddings and other celebrations back home. Then I see stuff like this:

And then I remember...
