In September 1966, Gene Roddenberry dispatched the crew of the Starship Enterprise on its maiden voyage through space and time and into the American living room. It was an inauspicious start, but forty years later the Star Trek universe is still expanding. The new film debuted last weekend and shot to number one, with a nearly $80 million opening weekend. In a piece we originally ran in 2006, Brooke explored the various television incarnations of the franchise and the infinitely powerful engine behind it all: the fan. Download or stream. Transcript is also on the page..

Of note is several mentions of fic, slash and a couple of quotes by a young fic writer and Henry Jenkins.

Gender-reversed Star Trek 2009 cast picspam by [personal profile] liviapenn.

As someone mentioned in comments, it does bring home how very strange it is to have an almost all male cast. Which could be applied to all my fandoms.

Life. ::shakes head:: I'm usually spoiled with a much more relaxed life, but lately it's been one thing after the other, with family, friends and work making me want to curl up under the covers and stay there for a long while. I'm a wimp, truly. Can I tell myself this is toughening me up for *real* problems? Eh. Eww, what a depressing thought.

Also, I now know how to brake into my own house, thanks to locking ourselves out when we went out for a walk this morning. ::facepalm::

Please weekend, get here fast so that I can go see ST again.

Over on delicious I'm tagging rebooted Star Trek fic as StarTrek09. Seems to be a fairly popular tag on that service. Also tagging pairings with the higher rank (or if equal rank, age) first. Didn't realize this was a Star Trek fandom convention, but I like it. I really, really hope we don't end up with squished names like Pinto* and -er- I think I saw some mentions of Spuhura and sheesh... just no.

Getting ready for SPN tonight and like most of my SPN flist I'm freaking the hell out. I'm also thinking we're going to have at least a couple of summer wank storms between fans who favor one character over the other. Not a very bold prediction, I know.

Not a spoiler, but I have a theory for tonight's finale and beyond. )

We're in Seattle, but had to take in Star Trek. Or I should say *I* needed to see it asap and yes, I was not disappointed. This is the most fun I've had at a summer movie in years. It beats the great fun I had watching Iron Man and really, I can't remember the last time when a sci-fi or fantasy movie has been up to this level of hype. Maybe "Fellowship of the Ring" - yeah, that about feels right. Although completely different in style and the first LotR movie had an almost palpable love of the world and characters. But wow, this was FUN.

Where No Man Has Gone Before

For decades, dedicated fans of 'Star Trek' have postulated a Kirk-Spock romance. A look at 'slash' fiction, 40 years later.
