Cell phones in Mexico

Via [personal profile] vampisandi

Besides having to pay the highest service rates in Latinamerica, people in Mexico will now have to associate their cell phones to the Mexican equivalent of their Social Security Number.

Link in Spanish.

Suposedly this is to prevent crime. Allrighty then!

Ironically I rejoined the ACLU just before I read this bit of news. A couple of extremely adorable college age kids came over to make their pitch.

I'll admit I know very, very little about the specifics of life in Mexico. But I have gathered, over the years, that the police and the government are not exactly trustworthy, upstanding people in general.

And even if they were, there is absolutely no ethical reason to tie your cell phone to your government identity number. *shiver*
