Sam

One thing about Sam is that I've grown to enjoy his character more and more with each season and each episode. I love his story arc and so far my fears that they'd fuck it up have not come true. You know that famous post by a Dr. Who fan, about how we all see our own show? I started watching SPN as that show with this guy Dean that I liked seeing onscreen, even as I disliked the actor's part in Smallville, even as this Dean dude tended to revel in acting like a dick, but made me laugh or roll my eyes, who had a little brother named Sam, who he loved a whole lot, but didn't quite get. That was the sense I got from the first 5-10 episodes of S1. Sam's story? That I didn't even get into until season 2, although wow, once John got into the picture in S1 I got a whole lot more interested in Sam.

I warmed up to Sam slowly and now I'm sort of obsessed with the character, to the point that even as Dean is the reason I started watching SPN, it is Sam who I think about all the time. I find it funny that what I was seeing as SPN wasn't the story that Kripke was trying to tell, according to the DVD audio commentaries. Kripke explained how the story was about this kid named Sam who wanted to walk away from the life his family led and just wanted normal. I remember being a bit surprised to hear that!
